1,000-Year-Old Pouch From Bolivia Contains Traces of Five Mind-Altering Drugs  Smithsonian.com

Archaeologists have found a pouch in a burial site at the Cueva del Chilano rock shelter in Bolivia that contains traces of five psychoactive substances. The 1,000-year-old pouch was originally unearthed in 2008 and found to be stitched together from the snouts of three foxes. It was made by the pre-Hispanic Tiwanuku culture and has been almost perfectly preserved thanks to the site’s dry mountain conditions. The contents of the pouch include ancient drug paraphernalia, bone spatulas for crushing seeds, a gem-inlaid crushing pad and a decorated bone snuffer. When researchers looked at the d…

Denver Voters Support ‘Magic’ Mushrooms  The New York Times

Voters in Denver, a city at the forefront of the widening national debate over legalizing marijuana, have become the first in the nation to effectively decriminalize another recreational drug: hallucinogenic mushrooms. The local ballot measure did not quite legalize the mushrooms that contain psilocybin, a naturally occurring psychedelic compound. State and federal regulations would have to change to accomplish that. But the measure made the possession, use or cultivation of the mushrooms by people aged 21 or older the lowest-priority crime for law enforcement in the city of Denver and Denv…

A measure on a May 7 Denver ballot appears to have made the Colorado city the first in the nation to effectively decriminalize personal possession and consumption of psilocybin mushrooms, which can cause hallucinations and spiritual or emotional experiences. Though city lawm…

50 Must-Read Memoirs of Mental Illness  Book Riot

It wasn’t until I went to group therapy that I really understood the power of finding solidarity and understanding with other members of the mentally ill community. Mental health memoirs offer an eye-opening look at the lives of the mentally ill and those around them. These works of narrative medicine allow others with similar challenges to say, “That’s exactly how I feel,” a powerful connection through representation when these conditions can be so isolating. These accounts can be harrowing, but almost always offer comfort and education. Memoirs of mental health and addiction can also fill…

Health Canada allows more religious groups to import ayahuasca  Global News

Health Canada has granted three more special exemptions to religious groups to allow them to import ayahuasca, a tea that contains hallucinogens that are banned in Canada and the U.S., Global News has learned. That brings the total number of ayahuasca exemptions to five, according to Health Canada. The exemptions allow the religious groups to freely practise their main sacrament without legal infringement. They will also pave the way for researchers to study the effects — and potential benefits — of ayahuasca. The first two ayahuasca exemptions were granted to groups in Montreal in 2017, as…
