4 cups of coffee a day may lower risk of chronic rosacea – WKRC TV Cincinnati

CINCINNATI (WKRC) – A new report says when it comes to your morning cup of joe, you might want to pour another cup.

This report in JAMA Dermatology found when it comes to coffee, it may be good for chronic rosacea. What really might surprise you is how many cups a day might be needed for this body benefit.

The study looked at those who had up to four cups of coffee a day and its impact on rosacea. Rosacea is a chronic inflammatory disease that affects multiple layers of skin, causing redness on the face.

Hope Merz of the Advanced Cosmetic Surgery & Laser Center says she’s had good luck treating rosacea with a treatment called intense pulsed light (IPL) therapy. But facial plastic surgeon Dr. Jon Mendelsohn said in this study on coffee, researchers did find people who drank four cups of coffee a day had a 23 percent lower risk of rosacea than those who drank only one cup a month.

He says this may be because, in moderate doses, coffee can be a vasoconstrictor, which means it constricts the blood vessels.

Because previous studies have shown that some people have rosacea complications from too much caffeine, make sure you talk to your own healthcare provider about your caffeine consumption.
