La Crosse, WI (WXOW) – There could be even more reason to raise a cup of Joe this morning. A new study takes a look at how coffee can help fight obesity.
The study examined whether coffee stimulated the transformation of “white” fat to “brown” fat. Brown fat is the common name for the so-called “good” fat that helps the body turn nutrients into energy. White fat is the type that accumulates the body. While previous studies did find that caffeine consumption helped with weight loss and expending energy, this study looked specifically at coffee’s role in the fat transformation.
When comparing to drinking a cup of water, the researchers did note that drinking coffee stimulated the region where the brown fat stores occur on the body. They say the results are positive, but they will now work to determine whether the same effects might come from caffeine pills.
