Pregnancy is an exhausting time — not least because of having to get your head around the ever-shifting guidelines concerning what you can and can’t eat or drink. Longstanding medical advice has been to restrict tea and coffee to a few cups a day. However, new research suggests that even this small pleasure could be too great.

The medical community has long been split on whether caffeine is harmful in small doses to unborn babies, but this week researchers at the US National Institutes of Health (NIH) are due to report at the American Society for Reproductive Medicine’s congress that women hoping to conceive and pregnant women should “eliminate” all caffeine from their diet to prevent baby loss.
